The Toyota Venza

Toyota builds its newest five-passenger crossover on the same line as the Camry, and the 2009 Toyota Venza is indeed the tall Camry wagon it appears to be. But to Toyota, the Venza is more than that. It's the product of almost seven years of deliberation and development work — an eternity in the car business. Nor is it a preordained, off-the-rack, three-row answer to family transportation like the Highlander and Sienna. In building the 2009 Toyota Venza, the Toyota planners have tried to read your thoughts years before you'd actually get around to thinking them. This package of everything is as long as a Camry (with the same 109.3-inch wheelbase) but as wide as a Toyota Highlander. All three vehicles ride on Toyota's K-platform architecture also used by the Avalon. The Venza has the same ride height as the Highlander, so it's 5.5 inches taller than a Camry, yet it's still 4.7 inches shorter than the Highlander. Still, the Venza (the name is a combination of venture and Monza) is a fairly conservative design. Nevertheless, Toyota argues with some justification that it's more of an image car than its shapeless platform mates. Initially, Toyota expected its new crossover to appeal mainly to women, but 55 percent of early hand-raisers are male.

L.B. Floyd Golf Classic

I remember getting that phone call like it was yesterday. I was bagging groceries on January 20, 2000 in Raleigh, NC after getting 22" of snow in one day. It was my wife's best friend frantic on the other end of the phone, "Oh my goodness Earl you have to get here she is about to have the baby"! At first I thought it was a joke because my wife was in Greensboro, NC packing and she was only 6 months pregnant.

Sure enough she was not kidding. By this time the lines were stacked all the way down the aisles to the meat department. Customers were steadily piling into the store for supplies. There was only 11 employees able to make it work, and four managers including me, I knew I had no choice but to leave. It was the hardest decision I have ever had to make but my wife and my soon to be premature child needed me.

I loaded up in my 1996 SR5 4runner and began out on the dangerous roads. A trip that normally should have taken me an hour and a half, took me four and a half hours to get there. Driving 35mph the whole way there my mind began to race. What if there is complications, what if something happens to my wife. What if they have to take my baby will she be able to survive? How long will she need to be in the hospital? What if she is not fully developed and they can't save her, what if, what if, what if???

When I finally arrive to the hospital I was updated on my wife's condition. I was informed that they had to take the baby because she developed preeclampsia. I did not know what those fancy hospital terms meant, all I wanted to know is are they alright? I was brought to my wife's bedside were she was still knocked out from the medicine in surgery. I stayed with her for hours while the doctors worked on the baby. I was so scared, my first baby girl was born, I was not there and she is fighting for her life.

Finally, my wife came to and we spoke for awhile. The nurses came in and said it is time for you to see your baby girl. I was led to the NicQ and had to scrub down very thoroughly. I was informed that any kind of germs can really harm the newborns in this area. I expected it to be like on television. I would see her laying in a bassinet with a little teddy bear next to her, but nothing could prepare me for what I was about to see.

I could tell by the seriousness in the air this was not going to be like television. As I approached I saw this little tiny baby no bigger than a beanie baby with all these tubes in her. I could not stop crying to see my first born daughter in a plastic box with all of these monitors hooked-up to her. Only 2lb 4oz and she was fighting for her life. She was surrounded by so much technology and high-dollar equipment that allowed her to live.

I could not touch her because the doctors said it might harm her growth. How can you not touch a person that you love or embrace her? But without a doubt I knew she was getting the best care and attention she needed. Doctors warned me that there might be some complications early in her development and in the future. Fast forward 9 years (2009) and all we had to worry about is a little asthma. We were one of the lucky ones my wife says to me all the time, Danielle is our miracle child.

Once I started working at Rick Hendrick Toyota I found out that our big charity was with the Cape Fear Valley Hospital ~ Friends of Children Foundation. Wow, you talk about a perfect bonus for working here. I learned about my General Manager's story of his child and why we participate. In 2008 I got a chance to play in the Golf Tournament to raise money for this foundation. Now here we are, 2009 and the L.B. Floyd Golf Classic & Friends of Children Fondation needs your help to make this an even bigger contribution year.

There are so many children out there like my daughter that are born everyday that deserve a chance for life. This years proceeds will go to to purchase of a General Electric "Giraffe Incubator" for the nicQ. These unit are very expensive and we can't wait to provide the hospital with this gift of life.
